Since I'm still deep in the throes of editing, I've decided you might as well suffer along with me. With that thought in mind, I'm writing another editing-related post.
As far as I know, nobody likes revision. I mean, chopping up your manuscript and stitching it back together again isn't exactly most people's idea of a fun time. But somehow -- and maybe it's all just warped my brain or something -- I don't really mind editing.
Okay, so my brain's definitely been warped. Let me explain myself, though.
I really love every part of the writing process, and I figure all writers do. Obviously, it's not all fun -- I don't actively enjoy editing. But I do enjoy the results: a tighter, healthier, more reader/agent-friendly manuscript.
The same can be said for outlining, which I really need to get better at. (In fact, after I've got my huge sweep-through edits done, I'm going to have to sit down and figure out the official game plan for book two. If I'd only done that for the first book, I wouldn't be having these editing woes right now. Ah well.)
So really, I think it all works out for the best. Time consuming, maybe, and a total headache, but definitely worth it. But what about you? Any thoughts?

Actually I've been revising for so long that I don't mind it. But I'm with you on having a better game plan at the start so I don't have to edit so much. Great post.
I found your blog via Literary Rambles. Editing can be a bit boring, but it's all about making the manuscript tighter. So in a way, I don't mind it at all!

I wandered over here from Lit Rambles, too. I'm also stuck in that pot-hole of editing my first draft.
Great post. I love the end results each round of editing gives, but some days it feels like a pretty BIG job. :)
I have a list of “to do's” I use for each book, things I've learned by listening to other writers and paying attention to their critiques of my work. I scan through that list, chapter by chapter, and then work through the plot outline, character developing, plausibility and pace.
After a few reads I’m amazed how much tighter and more succinct the novel is. Then I throw it to the wolves - my favorite critters and they tear it up! I make the adjustments that I think best fit my idea of the novel, while working to not lose my voice in the story and WHOOP! Even better and I only go through about a fifth of vodka during the whole process. Just kidding!

I'm visiting from Literary Rambles. Printing out is the last thing I do when I think the manuscript is done. It's amazing what we can catch on a literal page vs. a virtual one.
As frustrating as it can be, I love the editing process. That's when the book really comes together, when I get to know my characters like best friends instead of just my children. Good luck!

Generally, I agree with what you guys said -- it can get tedious, and it's not exactly thrilling, but editing isn't so bad.
